Steve Hackett es popularmente conocido por ser el guitarrista principal de Genesis durante su \u00e9poca de rock progresivo. Despu\u00e9s de abandonar al grupo al final de la d\u00e9cada de 1970, ha creado much\u00edsimos discos como solista. El m\u00e1s reciente, un disco conceptual lanzado en febrero de 2024, es titulado The Circus and the Nightwhale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hackett tiene el sonido del rock progresivo de los 70 muy bien instaurado en su ADN, y se nota claramente. Un sonido que sabe construir a la perfecci\u00f3n, y en este disco pareciera como una bandera que ondea incansablemente y con orgullo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Las canciones que Hackett y su banda interpretan son complejas, diversas y con m\u00faltiples partes, y cuentan con una base s\u00f3nica en la que detecto constantes referencias al sonido de algunas de las mejores bandas inglesas de la d\u00e9cada de los 70, como Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Yes, y a los propios discos de Steve Hackett.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Todo eso, mezclado con un toque de m\u00fasica cl\u00e1sica y sorpresivos momentos jazzeros. Hay hasta algunas apariciones de m\u00fasica circense y del Medio Oriente. Y por supuesto, siendo Hackett, no pueden faltar la guitarra ac\u00fastica con cuerdas de nylon, con las que el guitarrista interpreta ocasionales partes cl\u00e1sico-flamencas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Las canciones, aunque densas y con diversas partes, en general son relativamente cortas comparadas con las t\u00edpicas canciones del rock progresivo. Con excepci\u00f3n de \u201cGhost Moon and Living Love\u201d (que imagino es la pieza central del disco), muchas duran alrededor de los 4 minutos, lo cual puedo apreciar much\u00edsimo, ya que esta longitud permite que la m\u00fasica sea bastante enfocada. Realmente no percibo que haya \u201cmaterial de relleno\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De hecho, el disco en su totalidad es bastante corto, durando apenas 44 minutos. Dada la complejidad y la densidad de cada canci\u00f3n, es una experiencia intensa que no aburre nunca. Es de esos discos que me dan la impresi\u00f3n de que apenas acabo de comenzar a escucharlo y ya est\u00e1 terminando.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intercalado entre muchas de las canciones hay algunas piezas de entre 1 a 2 minutos de duraci\u00f3n, que sirven como transici\u00f3n entre canci\u00f3n y canci\u00f3n. Debido a esto, y a que todas las canciones cuentan con varias partes, a veces es dif\u00edcil saber d\u00f3nde empieza y termina cada canci\u00f3n. Y es que la experiencia de escuchar este disco a veces pareciera ser un caos bajo control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En s\u00ed, todo el disco fluye como una unidad, siendo un disco con una narrativa conceptual. Esta es otra clara referencia a la d\u00e9cada de los 70, cuando pr\u00e1cticamente era lanzado un disco conceptual cada semana, aunque hoy en d\u00eda no se ven tan seguido.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Las partes cantadas, la mayor\u00eda de ellas interpretadas por varios vocalistas en armon\u00eda, a veces suenan un poco gen\u00e9ricas, y en m\u00faltiples ocasiones recuerdan deliberadamente a las armon\u00edas vocales de Yes. Est\u00e1n bien, y hasta el mismo Hackett contribuye con su voz, aunque a mi criterio lo mejor del disco son las partes instrumentales, en donde las canciones realmente brillan como un din\u00e1mico rock progresivo, y en las que parte tras parte se puede notar claramente que Steve Hackett puede dar rienda suelta a su imaginaci\u00f3n. Afortunadamente, el disco es instrumental en su mayor\u00eda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me sorprende much\u00edsimo la calidad y el talento de la banda que acompa\u00f1a a Steve Hackett en la grabaci\u00f3n. Son m\u00fasicos de primera l\u00ednea, que interpretan el material del guitarrista con enorme entusiasmo, aportando sus toques personales. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Considero que, a\u00fan teniendo 74 a\u00f1os, este incre\u00edble guitarrista ha logrado crear uno de los mejores discos que ha realizado en su carrera en solitario desde que abandon\u00f3 a Genesis en 1978. Quien afirme que los m\u00fasicos producen el mejor material de toda su carrera \u00fanicamente durante su juventud obviamente no conoce a los ex miembros de Genesis.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

La m\u00fasica del disco, m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de lo descrito sobre ser en esencia un en\u00e9rgico rock progresivo, cuenta con una inclinaci\u00f3n oscura y melanc\u00f3lica, t\u00edpica de Steve Hackett. Y como he mencionado, es una estampida de diversas partes que no se detiene desde su inicio, y por todos lados aparecen cuerdas, \u00f3rganos, pianos, coros, vientos, y en el centro de todo, los solos de Hackett, exhibiendo el sonido de su confiable Les Paul Goldtop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Si bien Steve Hackett nunca ha sido el guitarrista m\u00e1s virtuoso, ni el m\u00e1s limpio para tocar, tiene un talento brillante para crear partes din\u00e1micas e interesantes, y melod\u00edas con mucho sentimiento, las cuales ejecuta con suma fluidez, como es demostrado una y otra vez durante todo este disco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Circus and the Nightwhale es una gran recomendaci\u00f3n para todo fan\u00e1tico de la era dorada del rock progresivo ingl\u00e9s, quien no dudo que quedar\u00e1 muy satisfecho al escucharlo. Recomendado tambi\u00e9n para cualquier admirador de la m\u00fasica conceptual y compleja, en la que se fusionen diversos estilos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
